What we Believe
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
It is clear from the New Testament that there is an
experience of God subsequent to conversion that enhances Christian living; it
is the receiving of the Holy Spirit. This fulfils John the Baptists
words: He shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost and fire, and is
directly linked by Jesus with the outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of
Pentecost. This promise of the Father, enjoyed with such obvious
delight by the disciples in the Upper Room, is for all who believe in Jesus
Christ as Saviour - for the promise is unto you, and to your children,
and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall
call.
The initial evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
is speaking with other tongues as the spirit gives utterances.
There are variants in the outpourings of the Spirit in the Acts of the
Apostles, such as wind, fire, eathquake, and prophecying, but throughout there
is the constant factor of speaking with tongues. This was regarded
as the norm, and was accepted as conclusive evidence by the Early Church. The
first Pentecost is repeatable, as the experiences of believers in Caesarea and
Ephesus prove.
If twice, why not more? Have you received your
personal pentecost yet?
The conditions are first, a definite experience of the
New Birth; secondly, a thirst after God; thirdly, a seeking in a spirit of
praise and prayer. Every Christian needs this blessing, every Christian may
have it.
