What we Believe
Man, a Fallen Creature
God made man upright, declared the
preacher. But how he has fallen from that state of lofty morality, noble
rectitude and sinless innocence! The Biblical story of the Fall is in
fact, not fiction. God made man in His own image - pure, rational, free. A test
of obedience - the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil - established
mans power to choose and marked him out as morally responsible for his
actions. Adam deliberately chose to despise Gods way and follow his own.
He partook of the forbidden fruit, he sinned - and fell, dragging an unborn
race with him.
Adams sin has affected the whole of mankind.
Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with
it. As a result, death spread to the whole human race, because all men
sinned. Our first parents brought shame and loss to us all. Their
defection has infected the entire world of men. All we like sheep have
gone astray. There is no man that sinneth not. All have
sinned and come short of the glory of God. How clear is the Bible on this
point! Is not this the basic reason for the mess the world is in today? Human
nature is distorted by sin, the image of God defaced, the human life enslaved
by lust and pride. But God who made man can re-make him. The prayer, God
be merciful to me a sinner, is always answered when uttered in
sincerity.
