THE SOCIAL SCENE

Christian influence has not been confined to education and health. It has also been vitally concerned about many other social issues. William Booth (1829-1912) the Founder and General of the Salvation Army inaugurated a social arm to his evangelistic work which became global and still flourishes today.

Dr. Thomas J. Barnado (1845-1905) was a Christian philanthropist who opened a Boys' Home in Stepney, east London which was the beginning of the famous Barnado Homes.

Lord Shaftesbury (1801-1885) another Christian philanthropist and Member of Parliament worked hard for the regulation of factory and coal-mine working conditions.

'Christian Aid' - a present-day Organisation ranks well alongside all the other Charities for the relief of famine overseas.
