EDUCATION
Take education for an example. The Church was involved in
this centuries before it became state-sponsored. Even in the dark ages (11th
century) the monasteries were rendering a real service to education in the
copying of classical Latin works, and later the larger cathedrals were
assembling libraries and archives. Well-trained clerks were also proficient in
speaking and writing Latin.
In the18th century there were grammar schools of a kind that
became the seed-bed for the Universities, and it was not until 1833 that the
British House of Commons decided to pay for schooling.
