Christians in a Secular World continued....
THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD
Jesus said to His followers, 'Let your light so shine before
men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in
heaven'.
This indicated their duty to live righteous lives by loving neighbours,
relieving the poor, taking up the case of the weak and making a stand against
injustice and evil. He compared such acts with the function of salt. He told
them, 'you are the salt of the earth, but if it loses its saltiness it is good
for nothing.
Salt is a preservative, and before the days of refrigeration things like meat
and fish were salted to delay the decaying process. Jesus wanted His people to
perform a parallel work in a morally and spiritually decaying society.
To those who would question whether social changes can
really be made in society should be reminded what Christians have done in the
past, despite their being in a minority. As a matter of fact in nearly all
areas of life, changes have been made by dedicated minorities. They have been
the pioneers.
