What About Women's Lib?

Some women have really been on the war-path in recent years to establish their rights. They have complained of discrimination against them by the denial of opportunities and rewards; unfair treatment, and a general feeling that they have been looked upon as second-class citizens.

At one time the more militant made their point in a very unusual way; they discarded their bras, which to most people, neither enhanced their cause nor improved their figures.

What exactly is Women's Lib all about? Are we being taken for a ride; is it something political; are they being unreasonable, or is it a legitimate subject to which the Christian conscience must address itself?

In a democracy and in our Churches, we do not believe that any group should be unjustly treated, whether on the grounds of religion, politics or gender.

An interesting thing about the subject is that it is not just a man versus woman argument. Some men agree with the feminist line and some women disagree with it. I once visited a lady who had been re-reading the book of Genesis, concluding rather pessimistically that women were created as God's second thought. My immediate reply was: “Well, never mind, it was a jolly good second thought!" And after all, second thoughts can often be as good or even better than first thoughts.

If we could think of creation as the work of a great Master Artist, it seems that, as the picture was nearing completion, God stood back from the canvas with a feeling that something was missing, whereupon He added woman.
