Man is Responsible to his Church

The Christian man must learn how to balance his responsibilities to his home and to his church, church leaders especially. It is possible to get so involved in church matters to the neglect of one's home and this can lead to a sad and disorderly domestic scene. It is a matter as the Song of Solomon puts it (1:6) of being "made a keeper of the vine‑yards, but mine own vineyard have I not kept". In recent years however there have been some helpful attempts to redress such imbalance through special conferences and seminars on marriage and family life.

Human nature does operate a kind of pendulum syndrome, and some have gone to the other extreme where the family, the home, garden and hobbies have been given more time than they should, even involving an idolatrous element. Haggai the prophet warned such when they were building their own ceiled houses, but neglecting the Temple.

The Scripture encourages men to have spiritual ambition to take their place in God's scheme of things. "He that desireth the office of an elder, desireth a good thing" (1 Tim.3:1). In some American churches there is a waiting list of people wanting to help their church in some way!

And let us not forget the great work of prayer. "I would that men pray everywhere" (1 Tim. 28). Praying is labour and primarily a man's job. This does not exclude women (1 Cor.II:5) which is perhaps as well seeing that they outnumber men in most meetings. "Watch you, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong".
