GENDER
P.C promoters are certainly sympathetic to women, and that
is good as for too long they have suffered discrimination in one way or
another; but in the enthusiasm to redress the situation, suggestions are afoot
to eliminate references to gender wherever possible or appropriate; so we no
longer have headmasters and headmistresses, but headteachers. Why they should
lose their gender when they enter the school gates is a mystery. It is
understandable that advertisements can ask for a headteacher in the interests
of equality, but when the vacancy is filled who becomes disadvantaged by their
being called Master or Mistress?
Then again, in business procedure P.C have adopted a clumsy
practice of changing titles for their meetings. So chairman becomes
chairperson. What's wrong with saying that Mary Smith was in the chair, or that
John Jones presided? and instead of spokesperson, why couldn't David Brown have
made a statement on behalf of Marks and Lukes Ltd?
