ABSURDITIES
We mentioned earlier that the test of P.C comes in the
application of the procedure. For instance a London lawyer once used the
publicity of a court case to highlight the word blackmail, insisting that black
was equated with wrong-doing and was therefore unfair to black people. That was
a classic case showing that an arbitrary interpretation of P.C can run away
from reality. The meaning of a word is always determined by its use in a
particular context. When the writer was discussing this matter with a former
missionary to Africa it was amusing to hear him say that African converts to
Christianity rejoice that God had 'cleansed their black hearts'!
But there are other cases. For instance, the word blackboard
is now out - even though that is its colour - and they are now known as
chalk-boards. One wonders what may follow if the witch-hunt continues. I
suppose we shall still be allowed to say that we have seen .....pool
illuminations? And surely snooker days are numbered when P.C gets round to the
tables. Just think of that arrogant white cue ball chasing all the coloured
ones off the board; and as for pot black..say no more.
