Prayer and Prophecy

Tongues and Prophecy

Speaking in tongues is not only the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit it is also the means that God has given for the believer to build themselves up in the faith. When talking of the use of tongues here we are not speaking of the 'gift tongue' that requires an interpretation, rather we are speaking about the language God has made available to all believers to edify themselves.

Jude 1:20 "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit."

1 Corinthians 14:4 "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church."

It is important to note that when built up in the faith we are more able to use the gifts of the Spirit. It has often been said that speaking in tongues is the gateway to all the other gifts, and this is true on the basis that it builds faith in the speaker. If you want to prophecy and you are a believer you must receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the initial evidence of which is speaking in tongues. The continuing evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit is submission.

Eph 5:21 "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."
