A Proved and Approved Gifting

The Risks of Prophecy

We are told in Romans that a man should prophesy in proportion to his faith. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Therefore there is always a risk in the employment of faith.

Rom 12:6 "We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith."

The following may modify the risks in the prophetic:

  • The teaching of sound doctrine within the local church.
  • Specific teaching about and exposure to spiritual gifts in the local church.
  • The creation of a safe environment in the local church, where mistakes and failures are allowed and addressed with loving correction.
  • An accepted process for the giving and weighing of prophetic words in the local church.
  • An openness of local church leaders to discuss and interpret the prophetic, even when they move in the gift less than others.

This is not a comprehensive list but gives an indication of the way forward, which may well be slightly different in different churches.
