The Risks of Prophecy

We are told in Romans that a man should prophesy in proportion to his faith. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Therefore there is always a risk in the employment of faith.

Rom 12:6 "We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith."

The following may modify the risks in the prophetic:

The teaching of sound doctrine within the local church.
Specific teaching about and exposure to spiritual gifts in the local church.
The creation of a safe environment in the local church, where mistakes and failures are allowed and addressed with loving correction.
An accepted process for the giving and weighing of prophetic words in the local church.
An openness of local church leaders to discuss and interpret the prophetic, even when they move in the gift less than others.

This is not a comprehensive list but gives an indication of the way forward, which may well be slightly different in different churches.
