A Gift for Today...continued

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit - A Word of Knowledge

A word of knowledge may be defined as a supernatural revelation of the Divine Mind. That is a fact, feeling or experience given by God supernaturally and without the act of learning. However, this knowledge may be the equivalent of raw data, that is a fact or facts that has not yet gone through the process of becoming useful or relevant information.

It is therefore important that words of knowledge are given publicly so that an understanding and/or course of action may be received or determined.

W.R. Jones in the book Pentecostal Doctrine in the chapter headed 'The nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit' (7) states:

""To another the word of knowledge" (1 Corinthians 12:8), and again it must be stressed that this is not the dedication to God's service of attained knowledge, nor is it Biblical or theological knowledge. Therefore it does not come as a result of natural ability, education, experience, understanding or study.

It is not the gift of knowledge, for that would tend to make us "know- alls", but the word of knowledge, and it is a fragment of God's knowledge given by the Holy Spirit. It is a revelation of knowledge that man could not know of himself. It is knowledge only known to God and thereafter revealed to us through a gift of the Holy Spirit."

"The word of knowledge can enlighten and encourage us, it can expose hypocrisy (as in the case of Ananias and Sapphira), it can show the needs of God's servants (such as missionaries) many thousands of miles away. Indeed, wherever a fragment of God's knowledge is necessary for the work of God and the people of God, the Holy Spirit manifests such a word to God's glory."
