Genetics continued....
TRANSGENICS
One of the latest developments in the science of genetics is
transgenics, the growing of animals whose genetic makeup has been changed in
some way, for instance, to produce certain hormones or make their organs more
compatible with human tissue types for transplantation.
The potential dangers of this are obvious, in that we cannot
know what might result from the introduction of animal DNA into the human body.
Could it cause animal diseases to leap across into humans or affect the human
immune system? Also if the use of animals in experimentation is ethically
suspect, how much more difficult is it to accept the production of animals
purely for the purposes of having their vital organs being harvested?
