Ethics....continued
An Ethic of Love
Christian Ethics are based upon love -love of God and love
of neighbour. Because the word 'love' has been so badly abused in our day, it
needs to be understood that it should be perceived in the light of its
Scriptural use. The NT uses the Greek word agape and never eras .
The latter conveys the sense of love of self and is
associated mostly with sexual and egotistical love. This is the way in which
love is portrayed in the media and this is the way in which the majority of
Western society understands the term.
Agape; however, is love, which is based upon the concept of
doing what is right. It is altruistic, and does not take into account the
individual's feelings or emotions. It is based upon the will of the individual
who wills to do what is right, even if it is the most difficult thing to do.
This is Christian love. This is the kind of love God had when He sent His Son
into the world to save the sinner (John 3"16).
